Carrying extra weight can lead to arthritis, back problems, and even diabetes. That means special food, regular veterinary checkups, weight monitoring, and lots of encouragement. We are her biggest cheerleaders!
Ozempic is currently being tested on cats...she may need that.

Skylar
đź‘‘ Meet Skylar...Our 14-Year-Old Tiny Dictator. Tough because he has to be. đź‘‘

Life wasn't kind to Skylar before rescue.
When we got him, his eye had been severely injured, and fleas and gnats covered his tiny body and damaged eye.
​
Skylar is a breeding mess which left this little guy with more medical challenges than any dog deserves. Since coming to our sanctuary, Skylar has received extensive veterinary care, including eye removal, treatment by a veterinary dental specialist, and surgery this year to remove a tumor nearly the size of a lemon.
​
Now we're tackling his skin and joint issues.Â
​
His ongoing medical needs mean our sanctuary will always be his home.

Lily came to us as a breeder surrender after two adoptions didn't work out.

So we made Lily a promise...

❤️ She will never be expected to tolerate young children if she'd rather enjoy a quiet afternoon nap.
❤️ And she'll never be considered "too grumpy" to be loved.

Getting older isn't always easy.

Like many senior dogs, Lily has a few age-related challenges. She waddles when she walks, has some respiratory issues, and several skin tumors.

🩶 Meet Loki &...his brother. Two Boys Who Chose Sanctuary Life. 🩶

These handsome kitties were found living in the woods behind an apartment complex. They had survived on their own, learning that people weren't always to be trusted.
​
We hoped they would blossom into family pets. Two adoptions later, they came back. They simply couldn't adjust.  And that's okay. Some simply need a safe place where they can be accepted exactly as they are.Â
​
Buddy still seems to "forget" who we are each day. He keeps his distance...until it's time for dinner or playtime. Then, just for a little while, he lets his guard down.
​
Loki with his handsome Siamese-shaped face, has his own challenge. Stress causes him to develop cystitis, so he requires a special prescription diet and careful monitoring to help prevent painful urinary blockages.
​
At just 3 years old, these boys have already told us what they need. Not a different home.  Just their home.

9 years ago, we received a call about a cat living on the streets in a rough inner-city neighborhood.  Fast forward...we took him in. Â

I think he already has. Â

He may never accept it the way we define love—with cuddles, kisses, and being held. But every evening, he chooses to come home. He knows his name. He knows dinner is waiting. He knows there's a warm bed and people who won't hurt him.  For a cat that spent his early life surviving on the streets, that's an incredible amount of trust.

His name is Scrappy because, well... he was always fighting for food and territory.  Life on the streets taught him that survival came first. And he believes the best defense is a good offense.

It took weeks before we could pick him up without getting bitten. Every hand reaching toward him felt like a threat.

Pick up with a jacket on, hold 3 seconds, put down. Repeat!Â
Slowly... Something changed.

Today, the same cat who once fought every touch now drools when he's being petted. He has discovered that gentle hands can bring comfort instead of fear.

Sometimes the greatest rescue isn't changing an animal.  It's changing the rest of their story.
​
Years ago, while attending a funeral in Pennsylvania, someone said that they were going to be taking a cat to the county shelter because she was "too skittish."
​
She was living in a dog crate in a room where motorcycles were stored and moved in and out. The loud noises and constant commotion had left her frightened of the world.
​
I couldn't stop thinking about those frightened eyes.  The next morning, before heading back to Kentucky, I went back and got her. That's how Lucky became "Lucky in Kentucky."
​
Today, at 13 years old, Lucky still isn't the kind of cat who greets every visitor. She trusts a small circle of people and prefers the quiet safety of sanctuary life.
​
Not every rescued animal is meant to become a social butterfly.  Some simply need a place where they never have to be afraid again. Â
